Team members shaving their heads to fight pediatric cancer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Members of the Syracuse football team will shave their heads this weekend to raise money in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Â
Quarterback Zack Mahoney, offensive linemen Samuel Clausman, Donnie Foster, Keaton Darney and former teammates Jason Emerich and Eric Anthony are expected to take part in Syracuse's annual St. Baldrick's Day celebration Sunday, April 2 at Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant.
Â
The student-athletes are members of Lilly's Army, a team formed to support Lillian Belfield, a little girl from Mexico, N.Y., who was diagnosed with Anaplastic astroblastoma – a rare form of brain cancer – in 2015. The Orange met Lillian that summer and have maintained a connection with her and her family. Lillian has been a guest at Syracuse practices and games. She and her twin sister, Emma, delivered the game ball at last year's spring scrimmage and attended the Syracuse chapter of Uplifting Athletes annual "Lift for Life" last July.
Â
Donations to support Lilly's Army can be made by visiting their team page: www.stbaldricks.org/teams/mypage/110064/2017.
Â
Now in its 13th year, the Syracuse St. Baldrick's event has grown to one of the largest of its kind in the nation. More than 500 people had their heads shaved last year. Together, with approximately 40 barbers and volunteers, they raised nearly $500,000 in the fight against childhood cancer.
Â
ABOUT ST. BALDRICK'S – The St. Baldrick's Foundation works to raise money to open high-impact clinical trials for rare diseases, fund supportive care research to improve the lives of patients and survivors, and provide scholarships to people interested in studying pediatric oncology. St. Baldrick's focuses exclusively on childhood cancers and has made over $200 million in research grant funding possible since 2005.
