BROOKLYN – Graduate transfer Andrew White III led the Orange with 22 points in Syracuse's (18-14, 10-8 ACC) 62-57 setback to Miami (21-10, 10-8 ACC) in the second round of the New York Life ACC Tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The Hurricanes used an early 10-0 run to establish momentum in the first half, and headed to the locker room with an eight-point, 36-28, cushion over the Orange.
Despite the deficit, White III tallied nine-straight points to end the first half for Syracuse. The guard had 13 first-half points and 22 total on the day, as he shot 6-12 from the field, including 1-6 triples, and 9-10 from the foul line.
White's performance marked the ninth game in the last 12 with 20-or-more points.
Syracuse claimed its first lead of the game with a 13-4 second-half opening run to sit atop Miami, 41-40. The run was begun and ended with a 3-point basket from freshman Tyus Battle. Battle marked his fifth-straight double digit outing with 14 points.
The Hurricanes established an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead, 48-41, and remain on top for the rest of the game.
The pair of White III and Battle combined for a trio of free throws to cut the run and the Miami lead to four, 48-44.
White continued his hot streak from the charity stripe, as the graduate student drained pair of free throws to come within three points, 53-50, with under five minutes to play.
With the Orange down by five with 2:33 on the clock, Syracuse inched back to tally a 5-2 run to bring the game within two, 59-57. The run included a trifecta under pressure from graduate transfer John Gillon and a dunk from sophomore Tyler Lydon with the assist credited to Battle with 12 seconds remaining on the clock.
Lydon had a game-leading 12 rebounds to mark his third-straight double-digit board game. The forward also added a team-high four assists.
The Orange were unable to add points to the board, as Miami tacked on three free throws to close out the game on top, 62-57.
Syracuse will learn its postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday, March 12. The event will air live on CBS at 5:30 p.m. ET.
