Orange take over top spot in USILA Poll
For the 97th week in program history, the Syracuse men's lacrosse team is ranked No. 1 in the USILA Poll.
The poll, which began in 1973, has featured the Orange in 420 of its 449 polls in the history of the ranking. 'Cuse has led off the poll nearly 22-percent of the time in poll's history. This is the first No. 1 ranking for 'Cuse since it entered the 2015 NCAA Quarterfinal and the Orange is 116-24 (.829) when holding the No. 1 ranking all time, including a 49-12 record under head coach John Desko.
In this week's poll, 'Cuse collected 335 points and 13 of the 17 first place votes. Hofstra (298 points/two first place votes) checks in at No. 2, with Maryland (283 points), Denver (277 points/one first place vote) and Penn State (258 points) rounding out the top-five.
Complete Poll
'Cuse's next ACC opponent comes in at No. 17 this week, with the Orange heading to North Carolina on Saturday after Tuesday's matchup vs. Cornell in the Dome. Binghamton, who is receiving votes and the first team outside the top-20, also looms on the Orange slate, with 'Cuse hosting the Bearcats on Senior Day, April 22.
Syracuse has already faced No. 6 Albany, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 8 Army, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 Johns Hopkins and No. 18 Virginia and is 5-1 vs. ranked opponents.
The men's lacrosse top-ranking is the latest number one for the Syracuse athletic department, which has seen numerous Orange teams claim the spot in the last two seasons. Field hockey spent multiple weeks at No. 1 this season and in 2015, prior to their NCAA Championship run. The Syracuse men's cross country team also finished 2015 at No. 1 after their NCAA title and came into the 2016 preseason earning the nation's top ranking. Syracuse men's soccer has also been tabbed as No. 1 by Soccer America this past fall and spent time as No. 1 in 2014. The Orange women's lacrosse program was most recently ranked No. 1 in 2014 by the IWLCA, and the SU men's basketball team earned the No. 1 ranking for the third time in five seasons when it spent time at No. 1 in the AP poll in 2013-14.
'Cuse and Cornell continue the nation's fourth-longest running rivalry on Tuesday, when the Orange host the Big Red at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports and TK99/105.
