Over the coming weeks, Syracuse field hockey will be introducing its newest members of the 2017 team. First, meet goalkeeper Emma Likely.
Wilton, Connecticut native Emma Likly will join the Syracuse field hockey team in 2017, bringing a goals against average of just 0.67 in high school with her, to bolster the efforts of a defense that finished inside the top-five of goals allowed in the NCAA last season under head coach Ange Bradley.
The Fairfield Country Interscholastic Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 2016, Likly led Wilton high school to the FCIAC Championship as a senior. She also played club hockey for FC United and AG Hockey Club's U19 Elite Team, where she qualified for the National Indoor Tournament in both 2016 and 2017.
"Emma is an impressive young woman both academically and athletically," Bradley said. "Emma decided to graduate a full year early and has been admitted to our S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.  Emma is ambitious, courageous, bright and a great competitor. She is committed to both her personal and team development. She has chosen to wear #0 in honor of former GK alumni and present USA team member Jess Jecko.  We are excited to welcome Emma to our Syracuse family."
Likly, who will complete her four years of high school coursework in just three years and graduate as a junior, brings a wealth of academic and athletic success to the Syracuse hockey family.
"I chose Syracuse because it is the right fit for me both athletically and most importantly, academically," Likly said. "I wanted a strong program that strives for excellence and that is what I found in the Syracuse hockey family."
Likly participated in a number of volunteer organizations outside of field hockey, she was selected as a student-leader I the CIAC Class Act Sportsmanship Program, referees youth field hockey and volunteers coaching field hockey in her community. She also participated in Guiding Eyes for the Blind puppy raising, which helps raise seeing-eye dogs. In addition, she participated in the Junior Leadership Program for the Wilton Women's Club and TOP Soccer Program.
"Emma is a natural leader in the school and especially in the goal cage," said Wilton High School Athletic Director Chris McDougal. "Her constant dedication and will to win makes Emma an extreme force on the field hockey field.Â
"Her dedication and work ethic helped lift Wilton to its first league championship in school history. It was during this championship she was named MVP. Emma is a very determined individual; with her drive and determination, there is no doubt she will achieve all her goals.  Emma understands the true meaning of the word leadership and has proven time after time that she can carry the weight of the team on her shoulders. Wilton will miss Emma, but growing up in the Finger Lakes I am looking forward to coming home for a visit and cheering on the Orange and of course Emma."
The daughter of Elizabeth and Bruce Likly, Emma said her goals on the field at Syracuse are to continue on the past success of the Orange and build towards the future, with goals of a National Championship.
Success at the national level is nothing new to Likly, who reached the indoor national championships on two separate occasions with her club team.
"I've worked with Emma for several years and have been continuously impressed with her hard work, commitment to excellence, and love of the sport," said AG Hockey Club coach Alexandru Gheorghe. "Whether it's seeking additional practice time and workout routines, or eagerly going up against [world field hockey great] Jamie Dwyer to test and hone her skills, Emma loves the sport and loves improving. I have no doubt she'll be a significant contributor at Syracuse and I look forward to watching her play for the Orange."
Likly says she fell in love with the program on her first visit and looks forward to representing the Orange on Coyne field.
"Ever since I stepped foot on Coyne Field and the Syracuse campus I knew it was the place for me," Likly said. "My love of the school continues to grow and I am so excited to be a part of the Syracuse Hockey family and to be representing the Orange with them on Coyne."
Likly said she most looks up to former Orange goalkeeper and current U.S. National Team member Jess Jecko and hopes to wear the same No. 0 that Jecko wore for the Orange.
"I most want to emulate Jess Jecko. I met Jess in the fall of 2015 and since then I have seen her play on many occasions and I want to reach the level of success that she achieved as a goalkeeper at Syracuse."
