SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim has announced that Howard Washington has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to play for the Orange next season.
A native of Buffalo, Washington spent the past year at Athlete Institute in Mono, Ontario. A 6-3, 175 guard, Washington averaged 17.9 points, 9.4 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game, according to media reports.
Athlete Institute reached the semifinals of the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) Playoffs in early April. The team's season ended in a 97-88 loss to The Rise Academy, a game in which Washington tallied 19 points. The Bears, coached by Chris Cobbina, completed the year with an 18-4 record.
Washington earned first-team All-OSBA recognition. He was selected to play in the BioSteel All Canadian High School Basketball Game, a prep all-star game, on April 10 in Toronto. Washington played for Team Red, a 153-134 winner in the contest.
Prior to enrolling at Athlete Institute, Washington attended Montverde Academy (Fla.) and played for Coach Kevin Boyle. Washington owns dual citizenship (Canadian/American).
Syracuse previously announced that Bourama Sidibe, a center at St. Benedict Prep (N.J.), had signed a National Letter of Intent.
The National Letter-of-Intent program was started in 1964. Administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), the program was designed with prospective student-athletes in mind. A signed letter-of-intent indicates a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year to the student-athlete, provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.
