4/17/2017 1:32:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
After racking up a pair of victories this week over Cornell and at North Carolina, the Syracuse men's lacrosse team (10-1, 4-0 ACC) are the unanimous No. 1 selection in this week's USILA/NIKE Coaches' Poll.
The Orange collected all-16 first place votes after earning the ACC Regular Season Championship with Saturday's win over Carolina, collecting 320 points in this week's poll. Maryland sits in second with 297 points, followed by Denver (281), Duke (253) and Albany (236) rounding out the top-five.
In addition to the No. 4 Blue Devils and No. 5 Great Danes, four other 'Cuse opponents are in the poll this week. No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 9 Johns Hopkins, No. 11 Army West Point and No. 17 North Carolina are all represented.
In addition, Virginia and Saturday's opponent Binghamton are receiving votes just outside the top-20.
The poll, which began in 1973, has featured the Orange in 421 of its 450 polls in the history of the ranking. 'Cuse has led off the poll nearly 22-percent of the time in poll's history. This is the second-straight week at No. 1 but prior to that it was the first for 'Cuse since it entered the 2015 NCAA Quarterfinal and the Orange is 118-24 (.831) when holding the No. 1 ranking all time, including a 51-12 record under head coach John Desko.
The men's lacrosse top-ranking is the latest number one for the Syracuse athletic department, which has seen numerous Orange teams claim the spot in the last two seasons. Field hockey spent multiple weeks at No. 1 this season and in 2015, prior to their NCAA Championship run. The Syracuse men's cross country team also finished 2015 at No. 1 after their NCAA title and came into the 2016 preseason earning the nation's top ranking. Syracuse men's soccer has also been tabbed as No. 1 by Soccer America this past fall and spent time as No. 1 in 2014. The Orange women's lacrosse program was most recently ranked No. 1 in 2014 by the IWLCA, and the SU men's basketball team earned the No. 1 ranking for the third time in five seasons when it spent time at No. 1 in the AP poll in 2013-14.
'Cuse and Binghamton will play the Orange's final regular-season home contest on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised on Spectrum Sports and ACC Network Extra.
