PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Syracuse softball team (17-12, 3-6 ACC) fell short in extra innings twice on Sunday versus Boston College (20-12, 6-2 ACC) after the Eagles rallied twice from one down in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
In game one, 'Cuse jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Olivia Martinez's ground ball to third allowed Hannah Dossett to score on an error in the top of the third inning. The score stayed that way until with two outs in the seventh, Taylor Coroneos doubled, driving in Brenna Griesser, who had singled and advanced to second on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
The run was charged to AnnaMarie Gatti, who pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just the one run. Sydney O'Hara entered the game with it tied at one in the bottom of the seventh to get the last out of the inning to head to extra frames.
However, with two outs in the eighth Tatiana Cortez walked. The next batter, Chloe Sharabba doubled to right field, but Jessica Heese came up throwing, to cutoff man Alicia Hansen, who rifled a throw home to Martinez, beating Cortez to the plate to keep the game tied.
The next batter, Moore would double as well though, bringing Sharabba home to end game one.
'Cuse collected three hits in the first game, with Sammy Fernandez (1-4), O'Hara (1-2) and Dossett (1-2) providing the offense.
The second game followed a similar pattern, with the Orange getting on the board first. Kelsey Johnson singled to left field, bringing home Bryce Holmgren, who walked to start the inning.
BC escaped the inning with further damage, while Alexa Romero was rolling in the circle for SU. She allowed just two hits through the first six innings, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
It was again Sharabba who scored the tying run, this time it was off her own bat though as she took a 2-0 pitch to center field to knot things at one. Romero got out of the inning and the teams again went to extra frames.
After a bunt single opened up the inning by Dani Thomas, she advanced to second on a sac bunt. Gatti entered for Romero, with Thomas stealing third to put her 60 feet from winning it. That's all BC would need as Gatti's pitch got by the catcher and to the backstop, scoring Thomas to win game two for the Eagles.
Hansen, Holmgren and Johnson each went 2-3 from the plate in the second game, with O'Hara (1-4) and Martinez (1-2) also finding success at the plate in the second game.
'Cuse will return to action on Wednesday, when the team hosts a double header with Binghamton beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Skytop Softball Stadium. Admission to both games is free of charge.
