Four Orange Tabbed to All-ACC Team
4/27/2017 8:22:00 AM | Men's Lacrosse
Four members of the No. 1 ranked Orange men's lacrosse team (11-1, 4-0 ACC) were honored by the ACC's coaches for their standout play so far this season that contributed to Syracuse running the table in the conference and winning the regular season title.
Defenseman Scott Firman, midfielders Nick Mariano and Sergio Salcido and faceoff specialist Ben Williams were voted to the 18 player team by the league's head coaches.
Firman, who switched from LSM to close defense prior to this season, has transformed into the team's top defensive weapon. Drawing the opponents' top threat every game, Firman is holding them to an average of 2.58 points per game. Those same players have season averages of 3.76 points per game. In addition, Firman has 13 caused turnovers and 25 ground balls on the year, most recently moving into sixth place in program history for caused turnovers against Binghamton with the 45th of his career. He's majoring in marketing at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at 'Cuse and is a Senior CLASS Award semifinalist.
Mariano enters the ACC semifinal leading the Orange with 29 goals and 43 points. He's also sporting the nation's 10th-longest goals streak, having found the back of the net in all-12 games this season. A Tewaaraton Award nominee, Mariano is on pace to lead the Orange in goals for the second-straight season since transferring from UMass prior to his junior season. He's majoring in child and family studies and this is his second-consecutive season earning All-ACC honors.
Salcido has emerged as one of the nation's best passing midfielders, on pace to break Syracuse's record for most assists by a midfielder this season. He enters the ACC semifinal with 28 helpers and 12 goals, looking for his second 50-point season in a row. Another two-time member of the All-ACC team, Salcido now has two of the top-nine single season assist totals amongst midfielders. The Tewaaraton Award nominee is majoring in child and family studies.
Williams has re-written the 'Cuse record books since arriving on campus prior to his sophomore season and 2017 is no different. The senior became the program's all-time faceoff wins leader (626) and ground balls leader (330) this season and is one of 23 players on record to win 100 faceoffs or more in all-four seasons. He's won 138-of-250 (.552) faceoffs this season and collected 66 ground balls. He's also scored twice and registered an assist. Williams is a double major in finance and accounting at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.
The four Syracuse selections trail just Duke's five for the most representation on the All-ACC Team and the conference major awards will be announced following this weekend's ACC Tournament.
