Senior is third Orange All-American honoree
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Syracuse senior Sydney O'Hara capped a historical final season with the Orange by earning National Fastpitch Coaches Association Third Team All-America honors at the Utility/Pitcher position, announced Wednesday by the NFCA. O'Hara is just the third Syracuse player to earn All-America distinction in the 17-year history of the program and the first since 2012.
Fifty-five student-athletes from 35 different institutions were selected to one of three 2017 NFCA Division I All-American teams, selected by an appointed committee. A full list of the 2017 All-American selections can be found here.
"It's a great exclamation mark to an incredible year for Syd," head coach Mike Bosch said.
"When a player makes a commitment to becoming the best she can be, when that player does it over a lengthy period of time and they do it for their dream school that is truly worthy of being an All-American. We could not be happier for Syd."
Fellow pitcher Jenna Caira was a Third Team All-America selection in 2012, while utility player Alexis Switenko earned a Second Team At-Large All-America bid in 2006.
"It's an honor to be named an All-American," O'Hara said. "I would like to thank my coaches and teammates for everything and for challenging me every day in practice.
"Being named an All-American is a reflection of the outstanding softball program here at Syracuse University."
O'Hara earned NFCA Mid-Atlantic First Team All-Region nods and was the first All-ECAC First Team selection for SU. She was a top-10 finalist for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year to become Syracuse's first player to earn a nomination for the award known as the most prestigious in collegiate softball.
A First Team All-ACC selection, O'Hara became the first Syracuse player with multiple honors in the Atlantic Coast Conference. She was also tabbed a College Sports Madness First Team All-American.
A native of Cicero, N.Y., O'Hara closed her four-year campaign at Syracuse by rewriting the Orange record books. A pitcher and first baseman, O'Hara is the owner of four single-game records, six single-season categorical leads and a pair of career-best marks for the Orange.
All four single-game records were set this season when O'Hara slammed four home runs in one game at NC State on March 10 to become just the fifth player in NCAA history to do so. She tallied four yard balls for 16 total bases, eight RBI and four runs to set a quartet of single-contest bests. O'Hara's performance solidified her the first espnW National Player of the Week accolade for the Orange on March 13.
O'Hara helped the Orange (31-19, 10-10 ACC) to its sixth 30-win season in the history of the program as she set single-season best marks in batting average (.476), slugging percentage (.833), on-base percentage (.626), walks (46), saves (6) and strikeouts per seven innings (12.6).
Her phenomenal senior campaign pushed her up in the record books to lead the Syracuse program in career on-base percentage (.454) and saves (13), while ranking second in batting average (.348) and slugging percentage (.583).
O'Hara graduated from Syracuse in May with degrees in Human Development and Family Science and Physical Education in Coaching from the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics.
