A 2016 All-State selection in Virginia, forward Emma Claire Stewart will join the Orange this season to bolster head coach Ange Bradley's attack in 2017.
"Emma Claire is a feisty forward who loves to score," Bradley said. "I am looking forward to seeing EC score her first of many goals for the Orange."
Stewart, who played at both Nansemond Suffolk Academy under Ashley Skinner and Smithfield High School under Wendy Conyers during her high school years, led Smithfield as a senior in both goals and assists. She is a three-time all-conference selection and was a First Team All-Region selection in 2016 in addition to Second Team All-State accolades.
"Emma Claire was a tremendous asset to our team," NSA Academy head coach Ashley Skinner said. "Her ability to visualize the field and execute on her stick skills was quite impressive. One thing that I always admired about her was that she never settled, she constantly worked to improve her skills."
In addition to her high school career, where she scored 48 goals and tallied 21 assists over four years, Stewart played for Focus Field Hockey under head coach Quan Anderson.
"EC is one of the hardest-working athletes and leads by example," Anderson said. "She is relentless on the field and dangerous around the cage. Her speed and agility makes her tough to defend."
That speed comes from Stewart participating as a dual-sport athlete in high school, also running as a sprinter on the Packers' track and field team. She was also a member of the Literary Society, National French Honor Society, DECA and was a writing center peer tutor in high school.
Stewart is eager to continue the legacy of success that has been building at Syracuse.
"I chose Syracuse because the program that [coach Bradley] has created is amazing," Stewart said. "I never want to stop improving and I know that I will keep learning on and off the field at SU."
The daughter of Hope and John Stewart, Emma Claire has a pair of siblings: Ethan and Fiona. Emma Claire has goals of helping the Orange win another NCAA Championship and becoming an All-American at 'Cuse and is eager to put the work in to reach those goals.
"I want to leave behind a legacy that represents how hard work and commitment are the only way to reach your goals." Stewart said. "It means everything to me to be given the chance to represent the Orange and their legacy at Coyne Field. I am extremely honored for the opportunity to wear the Syracuse jersey. To be able to play at the high standard that the players before have set is exciting and I cannot wait to represent SU."
