Sophomore Sydney Brackett scored twice in the season opener
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Sydney Brackett notched two first-half goals for the Syracuse women's soccer team to defeat Bucknell, 2-0 Friday night in Lewisburg, Pa. This victory marks the second time in three years that 'Cuse has opened the season with a road win.
"We respect Bucknell as they had a good season last year and we knew that it was going to be a tough game," said head coach Phil Wheddon. "I thought we controlled the play in the first half and capitalized on a few key opportunities. It was great to get a win and start the season off well."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Syracuse struck early as Brackett muscled her way past a defender to drill a goal into the far right corner at the 11-minute mark in the first half. Then, at the 34-minute mark, Brackett received a thru pass from senior Sheridan Street and snuck the ball near post just past the goalkeeper to put 'Cuse up 2-0 heading into halftime.
The sophomore finished the night with six shots, just missing the hat trick after a Bucknell save on a two-on-one breakaway by Brackett and senior Eva Gordon. Brackett's goals marks the first time a Syracuse player has notched a pair of goals in a half since Aug. 21, 2016 when Alana O'Neill tallied two against Delaware.
OF NOTE
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan made her 50th career start today in goal for the Orange, tabbing her 17th career shutout with the 2-0 victory over Bucknell. The senior captain made four saves for Syracuse while the Orange defense limited the Bison to just five shots the whole night.
As a team, Syracuse posted 22 shots during the game, the most by the Orange since October of last season when the team tallied 23 against Boston College. Ten different 'Cuse players recorded a shot in the game with five of the shots coming from Orange off the bench. Brackett, O'Neill and freshman Kate Donovan all had close misses off the posts.
UP NEXT…
Syracuse returns to SU Soccer Stadium for its home opener on Monday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. against Connecticut. Admission is free and the Orange will be hosting youth organizations as part of Youth Club Appreciation Night.
