Hoffmann's Hat Trick Powers 'Cuse Past #25 Pacific
8/27/2017 5:19:00 PM | Field Hockey
A hat trick from freshman forward Carolin Hoffmann and another shutout from the defensive unit powered No. 5 Syracuse (2-0) to a 3-0 win over No. 25 Pacific (1-1) on Sunday.
"I'm really pleased with the performance of our upperclassmen," said head coach Ange Bradley. "They led and turned in a mature performance, executing the game plan that we put together."
Â
Hoffmann got the scoring started with her first collegiate tally in the 35th minute, when she finished a feed from Caroline Cady to open up a 1-0 margin heading into the break. The goal allowed the Orange to take a lead into the locker room despite being out-shot 8-7 in the frame, with the Tigers also winning six corners to Syracuse's three.
The second half was where the intensity picked up for 'Cuse, out-shooting the Tigers 10-4 in the second frame.
Hoffmann got the second-half scoring going off a corner play. Roos Weers drove the initital ball into the circle where it was collected by Elaine Carey. Carey then flipped the ball onto Hoffman who found the top-left corner of the cage in the 53rd minute.
Â
"I think its fantastic," Bradley said of Hoffmann's hat trick. "I think when our seniors, juniors and sophomores do their job and play the way they did today, it allows our freshmen like Carolin the opportunities to perform that way. It's exciting for her to get her first hat trick, hopefully the first of many more to come."
Six minutes later, Hoffmann tacked on another, this time off a pass from Emma Tufts, to give Syracuse its final result of 3-0.
Borg van der Velde recorded her second-straight shutout to open her collegiate career, making three saves in the victory.
Next, Syracuse will conclude its three-game road swing to open the 2017 campaign on Monday at 2 p.m. eastern, when UC Davis welcomes the Orange. 'Cuse's home opener will come next Saturday vs. Bucknell.
GAME NOTES: Hoffmann's hat trick is the first for the Orange since Alma Fenne recorded three goals on Oct. 17, 2015 in a 6-0 win over Wake Forest … This is also the first time Syracuse has recorded back-to-back shutouts since September of 2013, when the Orange shutout Princeton and Stanford in back-to-back contests … This is the seventh time Syracuse has had a pair of shutouts to start the year, doing so previously in 1978, 1981, 1986, 1997, 2001 and 2008.
