The Syracuse men's lacrosse team will participate in an international scrimmage with the Iroquois Nationals and Team Israel in the highlight event of the Deyhontsigwa'ehs The Creator's Game, Lacrosse Weekend.
Thousands of lacrosse fans are expected to make their way to Syracuse for the four-day event from Sept. 28-Oct. 1. The event is the most-recent international lacrosse event to take place in Syracuse since the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in 2015.
The Iroquois Nationals, who have consistently had a roster featuring a plethora of current and former Orange stars, finished third at the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships with a roster that featured seven players with 'Cuse ties, including current Orange attackman Brendan Bomberry. Team Israel finished seventh at the event.
The Orange's scrimmages will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Oct. 1 in the Carrier Dome. Tickets can be purchased for $10 with parking available for $5.
In addition, the weekend will feature the Haundenosaunee Wooden Stick Festival – which is the educational outreach festival for lacrosse athletes and the community at large – will feature speakers and demonstrations in the areas of lacrosse, wooden stick making, native foods, arts, traditional dance and culture. All Wooden Stick Festival events are free.
There will also be the Lacrosse All-Stars North American Invitational (LASNAI) Box Lacrosse Tournament, which brings elite players from around the world to play in the Tsha' Thon'nhes (fieldhouse) on the Onondaga Nation Territory. Tickets for the LASNAI Tournament cost $15 per day or $25 for the Tournament.
"We live in the heartland of lacrosse - homeland to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Dehontshigwa'ehs was played over 1,000 years ago at Onondaga Lake, where Five warring Nations, came together in peace," said Philip Arnold, Syracuse University Department of Religion Chair/Associate Professor & Founding Director of Skä·noñh: Great Law of Peace Center. "Since time immemorial, the Haudenosaunee wooden stick game has been an integral part of a peacemaking process that fosters the proper, reciprocal relationships between human beings and the natural world."
The Thompson's will also host a clinic for native kids on the outdoor fields of the Onondaga Nation Territory.
Syracuse's scrimmage is the first of three challenging fall tests for the 2018 squad. In addition to the international scrimmages, 'Cuse will host its annual Alumni Game two weeks later, which always pits a talented roster of alums featuring a myriad of professionals against the current squad.
To cap off the fall, the Orange will travel to Stony Brook, to participate in a pair of scrimmages. 'Cuse will face a defending NCAA Champion Maryland squad and the host Seawolves on Oct. 22 to conclude their fall competition.
