HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Kendra Lukacs led the Syracuse women's volleyball team with match-highs in kills (14) and digs (15) in its five-set loss to Bryant (25-17, 25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 10-15) Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Hofstra/Asics Invitational.
Santita Ebangwese added 13 kills and a match-leading 10 blocks for the Orange (6-5). Anastasiya Gorelina notched nine kills with 13 digs and Annie Bozzo contributed 29 assists.
Julia Flynn tied Lukacs with a match-leading 14 kills and added 14 digs to lead Bryant (7-6). Kirstyn Sperry tallied 29 assists.
How It Was Decided
'Cuse was in control early and jumped out to a two set lead. The Orange broke open an 8-8 tie in the first set with a 12-2 scoring run and held off Bryant for the 25-17 victory.
With set two tied at 15, Syracuse closed on a 10-4 run to win 25-19.
Bryant used a 13-3 run to take a commanding 23-12 lead in set three and held on to win 25-15. The Bulldogs took an 11-10 lead and never looked back to win the fourth set, 25-20.
Bryant jumped out to an early 11-4 advantage in the fifth set and held off a 'Cuse comeback effort to win 15-10.
Coach's Thoughts
"With a few key pieces missing in our lineup, we struggled to find a consistent rhythm," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "I thought that Kendra (Lukacs) performed very well. We are banged up as a team right now and she was our go to hitter today."
Of Note
Syracuse recorded a single-match season high with 14 blocked shots.
What's Next?
The Orange will conclude Hofstra/Asics Invitational play tomorrow versus Binghamton and Hofstra at 1 pm. And 7 p.m., respectively.
