SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Cornell's Ryan Hill scored the only goal of the game in the 98th minute to lead the Big Red to a 1-0 victory against No. 11/13 Syracuse at the SU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Â
"We had our opportunities tonight, we just didn't take them," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "Full credit to (Cornell). They kept us off (the scoreboard). In overtime, they took their opportunity."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Cornell's (2-3-1) winning goal was set up by a throw in just past midfield. The ball was played to the center of the field to Tyler Bagley, who slid a pass to the left side of the box to Hill. Hill put his shot past Syracuse goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert to give the Big Red their first win against the Orange since 2001.
Â
Syracuse (4-2-2) created several scoring chances throughout the match, the best coming off a corner kick in the 24th minute, but junior Jonathan Hagman hit the post with his shot. Freshman Simon Triantafillou also had a chance in the 49th minute off a pass from junior Hugo Delhommelle, but Cornell goalkeeper Mitchell Meyer made one of his three saves to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Â
OF NOTE
Syracuse recorded 11 corner kicks to six for Cornell, while the Big Red had a 9-8 advantage in shots. Hilpert finished with four saves.
