Orange Comeback Not Enough Against Duke
9/22/2017 9:49:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 11/13 Syracuse couldn't overcome a two-goal deficit in a 2-1 setback to No. rv/16 Duke on Friday, Sept. 22. The match was played in front of a crowd of 2,022, which is the sixth-largest in SU Soccer Stadium history.
Â
"Right at the end, we're pushing to find an equalizer and, unfortunately, tonight we weren't able to," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought we made two mistakes tonight and they capitalized on them. We dug ourselves a hole, and we almost dug our way out of it but full credit to Duke. They are a very good team."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
A turnover near midfield helped set up Duke's first goal in the 36th minute. The Blue Devils (6-1-1, 2-1) served the ball into the box toward the far post. An Orange defender headed the ball toward the center of the box where Brian White collected it and slotted his shot into the back of the net to give Duke a 1-0 lead.
Â
Duke added to its advantage in the 53rd minute off a set piece. Max Moser served the ball into the box where it deflected off Markus Fjortoft into the goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
Syracuse (4-3-2, 0-2-1) was the aggressor the remaining of the match and broke through in the 78th minute. Junior Jan Breitenmoser back heeled the ball to junior Jonathan Hagman, who placed his shot into the lower left corner of the goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Â
The Orange continued to send numbers forward and created several scoring chances, but couldn't take advantage of their opportunities in their third consecutive loss.
Â
OF NOTE
Hagman's goal was his fifth of the season, which tie his season high set a year ago. He leads the team in goals and points (10).

UP NEXT
After playing four straight home games, Syracuse goes on the road to take on Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. on Monday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
