Delhommelle Leads Orange Past Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Hugo Delhommelle recorded a career-high three points to lead No. 11/13 Syracuse to a 2-0 victory at Colgate on Monday, Sept. 25. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Orange and improves their overall record to 5-3-2.
Â
"It was important to come on the road and get a result," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I thought the performance, not just the result, was very good, especially in the first half. I thought we played some of our best (soccer), probably our best (soccer in the first half). We moved the ball, scored a couple of goals and probably should have had a couple of others. I'm delighted to get our first clean sheet and a win on the road."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Both of the Orange's goals were scored on set pieces. Syracuse (5-3-2) took the lead for good in the ninth minute when Delhommelle put his free kick from 20 yards out into the top corner of the goal for his second tally of the season.
Â
Delhommelle was involved in the second scoring play as well. He served the ball into the box on a corner kick in the 37th minute where sophomore Johannes Pieles headed it into the back of the net to give the Orange a two-goal advantage.
Â
The deficit was too much for Colgate (3-6-0) as the Orange defense limited the Raiders to just one shot on goal that didn't come until the 88th minute. Goalkeeper Hendrick Hilpert made the save as the Orange recorded their first shutout of the season.
Â
OF NOTE
The win was the 27th of Hilpert's career, which puts him in a tie for fourth place with Rick Fatscher (1982-85) on Syracuse's career record list. In addition, he moved into a tie for fourth place with Chris Whitcomb (1985-88) on the school's all-time shutouts list with the 18th of his career.
