SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team takes the ice for the first game of the 2017-18 slate against Bemidji State on Sept. 29 at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. The Orange square-off with Bemidji State in a two-game set (Sept. 29 and 30) before returning home to face No. 2 Wisconsin on Oct. 6 and 7.
Â
RETURNING ORANGE
The Orange return 16 letterwinners from a season ago, including points leader senior captain Stephanie Grossi. The returning players accounted for over 65 percent (56) of goals scored during the 2016-17 campaign and combined for 82 assists last year.
Â
NEWCOMERS
Syracuse added seven freshman to the 2017-18 roster, three from the United States and four Canadian hockey players. Forwards Taylor Curtis, Emma Polaski and Ronnie Callahan are all US National Development camp attendees, while Victoria Klimek, Jessica DiGirolamo and Kristen Siermachesky suited up for Team Ontario U18. The sole goaltender of the group, Edith D'Astous-Moreau, represented Team Canada at the 2016 World Championships.
Â
10 YEARS IN THE MAKING
The Orange are entering their 10th season in action, having accumulated a 137-142-35 record during their time in the CHA. Head coach Paul Flanagan has been at the helm of the Orange for all 10 seasons, leading Syracuse to six conference Finals appearances, including three consecutive appearances from 2015-2017.
Â
ROAD OPENERS
In 10 seasons, the Orange have only opened the season on the road three times, posting a 1-2 mark over those three games, most recently recording a 3-1 victory at No. 10 Northeastern in 2013. In all road openers, 'Cuse is 3-5-1, having tied Northeastern, 1-1, in the road opener last season.
Â
SCOUTING BEMIDJI STATE
'Cuse has only faced Bemidji State twice before in a pair of games at home last season. BSU emerged victorious in both games, outscoring the Orange 5-1 in the two-game span. The Beavers were picked to finish fifth in the WCHA Preseason Coaches' Poll and finished seventh in the conference in 2016-17. The Beavers welcome back 16 letterwinners and have added nine newcomers to the squad.
Â
UP NEXT
