PITTSBURGH – No. 21/19 Syracuse couldn't convert on a corner kick in the final minute of play and lost at Pittsburgh, 2-1, in men's soccer action on Friday, Sept. 29.
Â
"There is a thin margin between winning and losing on these big ACC nights," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "Congrats to Pitt. We were a little sloppy with the use of the ball. We kept pushing to the end, but we ran out of time. It wasn't one of our better performances tonight. The good thing is we play a very good Akron team on Tuesday at home. We will lick our wounds and be ready."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Panthers (5-5-0, 1-3-0 ACC) took the lead for good in the 31st minute. Pol Planellas played the ball forward to Edward Kizza, who headed it into the lower right corner of the goal to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until the 80th minute when Colin Brezniak scored on an assist from Josh Coan to put the Panthers up 2-0.
Â
The Orange (5-4-2, 0-3-1 ACC) cut the deficit in half on a set piece in the 88th minute. Off a free kick, junior Hugo Delhommelle served the ball into the box where sophomore Johannes Pieles headed it into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Syracuse had one final chance to tie the score when it was awarded a corner kick in the 90th minute, but couldn't convert.

UP NEXT
