HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Orange came up just short in their upset bid at No. 4 Colgate, Tuesday afternoon at the Class of 1965 Arena. Redshirt junior Brooke Avery notched her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the contest.
"Overall I liked our effort and I thought we worked hard but I it boils down to making plays to either win a game or lose a game," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "They are very correctable things and we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We've got four huge points in front of us with a team that's one point behind us so we have to learn from our mistakes and keep working."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action as each team tallied six shots on goal in the first period. Colgate got on the board first with a goal just two minutes into the second frame.
However, the Orange responded with vengeance throwing 12 shots on net in the second period, double what the Raiders were dishing out. A high stick by a Colgate player gave Syracuse a man-advantage at 6:26 in the second frame. Avery capitalized on the power play, sniping a one-timer into the back of the net off a pass from down low by freshman Emma Polaski.
Colgate took a 2-1 lead at 7:30 in the third, which would remain the score for the rest of the contest.
OF NOTE
Avery has recorded a goal in three consecutive games and is riding a four-game point streak. She sits tied with senior Stephanie Grossi for the longest point streak on the season. The only other Orange to score in three straight games this season are sophomore Kelli Rowswell (twice) and freshman Victoria Klimek.
Senior Abbey Miller made 30 stops on goal for the Orange, marking her seventh game with 30 or more saves this season.
