Orange Top Nittany Lions in Overtime
1/19/2018 9:11:00 PM | Ice Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Orange snagged a crucial two points as they defeated conference foe Penn State, 3-2 in overtime fashion on Friday night. Senior Megan Quinn notched the game-winner for Syracuse with her second goal of the season.
"Tonight we found a way and earned a huge two points in league play," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I give Penn State a ton of credit for the way they battled back in the third to force overtime."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The netminders put on a show as the two goalies combined for 20 saves in the first period of play to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.
Freshman Jessica DiGirolamo put the Orange on the board with an unassisted goal just over halfway through the second period. Just three minutes later, Emma Polaski picked up the puck from a scrum in front of the net and buried it in the back of the goal to give the Orange a 2-0 lead.
The Nittany Lions tallied two third period goals to even the game at two and send the contest into overtime. At 3:06 into the overtime period, Quinn beat the Penn State goalie glove-side to score the game-winning goal for the Orange.
OF NOTE
This is the first overtime victory for the Orange since the 2016 CHA Tournament when Syracuse topped Penn State on 3-2 on Feb. 4, 2016.
