'Cuse Sweeps Penn State Following OT Win
1/20/2018 5:58:00 PM | Ice Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Orange completed the series sweep after topping Penn State, 2-1, in overtime for the first back-to-back overtime wins since the 2015-16 season. Sophomore Savannah Rennie notched the game-winner for Syracuse with her second goal of the season.
"It was a real character win for us today," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We dominated the third period and had a great penalty kill in overtime that led to the winning goal."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a power play goal by Natalie Heising six minutes into the game. The Orange were not deterred and proceeded to outshoot Penn State 21-12 in the first two periods of action.
Junior Allie Munroe notched the equalizer for the Orange, throwing a backhanded shot at the net just three minutes into the second period.
The teams traded shots throughout the third period but neither team could find the back of the net. The Syracuse penalty kill went to work late in the frame, killing off back-to-back Penn State power plays. The unit allowed just one shot on goal across both power plays.
For the second consecutive game, the contest was decided in overtime fashion. The Orange defense played lights out, blocking four shots while on the penalty kill. Senior goalie Abbey Miller stood on her head with three saves in the overtime period to keep the Orange in the game.
With just over a minute to go in the game, Logan Hicks sent a pass up the ice to Rennie for the breakaway opportunity. Rennie converted on the chance, backhanding the puck over the diving Penn State goalie
OF NOTE
Saturday's game was the fifth overtime contest for the Orange this season as Syracuse holds a 2-1-2 record when playing free hockey. It's also just the second time in program history that the Orange have posted back-to-back overtime wins, the first occurrence coming in 2016 when 'Cuse defeated Mercyhurst and Penn State in back-to-back games.
The Orange outshot the Nittany Lions 34-17, which is the sixth time this season that the Syracuse offense has eclipsed the 30-shot mark. When posting more shots than the opposition, the Orange are 7-5-2 on the season.
