Adams averaged 9.2 yards a carry for the Sooners in 2017
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange head football coach Dino Babers announced Monday that running back Abdul Adams has joined the program as a transfer from the University of Oklahoma.
Â
Adams, who spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons with the Sooners, is enrolled in classes at Syracuse and will participate in spring drills. Per NCAA rules, he will sit out the 2018 season. Adams will have two seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2019.
Â
A 5-11, 205-pound native of Landover, Md., Adams rushed for 825 yards and a touchdown in 19 career games for Oklahoma. He also caught eight passes for 103 yards and a score.
Â
In 2017, Adams played in 12 games (four starts) and ranked third on the team with 542 yards rushing on 59 carries to help the Sooners capture the Big 12 title and earn a berth in the Rose Bowl opposite Georgia. His 9.2 average yards per carry last fall led all Oklahoma ball carriers (min. 20 attempts). Adams had his best game of the season against Baylor, running for a career-high 164 yards, including a 99-yard touchdown that marked the longest rushing play in the history of Oklahoma football.
Â
As a freshman in 2016, Adams ran for 283 yards on 53 carries (5.3 avg.), including a season-high 91 yards in his collegiate debut versus Louisiana-Monroe.
Â
Adams was one of the top running back prospects in the Class of 2016 coming out of North Carolina's Hillside High School. He was rated in the top 15 at his position by Rivals.com (No. 10), Scout.com (No. 15) and 247Sports.com (No. 15). As a senior at Hillside, Adams rushed for more than 2,000 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. Prior to enrolling at Hillside, Adams played three seasons at Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C.
Â
Adams' addition raises Syracuse's number of mid-year enrollees to 11. He and the rest of the Orange newcomers hit the field for the first time when spring practice opens in March.
