SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team (9-14-2, 8-4-1) bested longtime College Hockey America rival Mercyhurst (12-13-2, 9-3-1), 4-1, Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion to take a crucial two points in conference play. Redshirt junior Brooke Avery extended her point-streak to seven games with the game-deciding goal in the second period.
"Burriss' goal was really the game," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I don't think we responded well to start the third period so kudos to the Mercyhurst penalty kill. We can't count on puck luck all the time but we will take it tonight with a huge two points. [Mercyhurst] will have a much more determined outlook tomorrow."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The game was knotted at zero for the first half of the first period until a long feed by junior Allie Munroe found Savannah Rennie on the breakaway. The sophomore received the puck and buried a wrist shot top shelf to give Syracuse the 1-0 lead at 9:18 in the first frame.
Just over halfway through the game, senior Alysha Burriss shot a centering pass to Avery who snuck a power play goal just past the Mercyhurst netminder to put the Orange up 2-0. The Lakers responded two minutes later to cut the lead in half.
The Orange penalty kill went to work in the second period, killing off four power play opportunities for Mercyhurst, including back-to-back PKs halfway through the second frame.
Four minutes into the final period, Burriss gave the Orange a two-goal cushion, stripping a defender and then beating McDonnell with a deke and a backhander. The Lakers used a late period power play and an extra attacker to pressure the Orange but senior goalie Abbey Miller remained a wall in front of the net to shut down the Mercyhurst attack.
Senior Stephanie Grossi tallied her sixth goal of the season, an empty net score, as time expired in the game to solidify the win for the Orange.
OF NOTE
Creating opportunities early is key for the Orange as Syracuse is 8-3-1 when scoring first. Friday's win marks the fifth time this season that 'Cuse has scored four or more goals in a game.
With her late-game goal, Grossi inches closer to the Syracuse all-time record for career points, sitting at 110 through her time with the Orange. She is just two points shy of leader Melissa Piacentini. Fellow senior, Burriss, cracked the top ten for career assists, tallying 44 in her four-year career with the Orange.
UP NEXT
The Orange return to action on Saturday for the final regular season matchup against Mercyhurst. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. and admission to all home games at Tennity is free.
