Syracuse Comeback Cut Short at #3/3 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Frank Howard led Syracuse (12-5, 1-3 ACC) with 18 points in a 68-61 loss to No. 3/3 Virginia (15-1, 4-0 ACC) Tuesday night at JPJ Arena. The Orange made a late push in the second half, trimming the Cavaliers' lead to five, but came up short.
Freshman Oshae Brissett added 16 points with eight rebounds and sophomore Tyus Battle finished with 12 points and five boards. Junior Paschal Chukwu scored nine points and totaled a career-high 16 rebounds.
Kyle Guy led Virginia with 22 points. De'Andre Hunter scored 15 points and Devon Hall added 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.
How it was Decided
Syracuse scored nine points in 34 seconds, forcing three turnovers along the way, and cut the Virginia lead to five with 29 seconds to play. Four Cavalier free throws down the stretch sealed the victory.
Game Summary
Howard scored eight of the first 10 Syracuse points and the Orange jumped out an early 10-7 lead. Brissett drained a 3-pointer to give Syracuse a four-point advantage with 8:36 remaining in the first half.
Virginia went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 22-19. Howard knocked down a trey and the Cavaliers answered with three points on a jumper and a free throw. Matthew Moyer made a tip-in, followed by four Virginia points and Battle knocked down a jumper to send the Orange into halftime, trailing 29-26.
A 5-0 run to start the second half gave Syracuse a 31-29 lead. Moyer made a layup and Brissett knocked down a 3-point field goal. The Cavaliers responded with six-straight points to go ahead 35-31. Howard converted two free throws but Ty Jerome drained back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the Virginia lead to eight with 14:11 to play.
Battle and Brissett hit two consecutive jumpers to cut the Cavaliers' lead to four. Hall and Guy drained a one trey each, sandwiched around a Battle bucket, to give Virginia a 50-42 lead and a 6-0 run later in the half extended its lead to 14 with 1:24 to play.
Numbers of Note
Syracuse shot 23-of-60 (38.3 percent) from the field and limited Virginia to 20-of-53 (37.7 percent) shooting. The Orange also held a 41-31 advantage on the glass. The Cavaliers knocked down 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) of their free throws.
Chukwu's 16 rebounds on the night eclipsed his previous career high of 12 set earlier this season versus Eastern Michigan. Chukwu also grabbed 10 offensive rebounds which is another career mark for the center from Westport, Conn.
In a game between two of the top defenses in the country, Virginia held a significant advantage in assists. The Cavaliers finished the contest with 15 assists and limited Syracuse to three. The Orange are the first ACC opponent to score at least 60 points against Virginia.
