SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Tyus Battle, junior Frank Howard and freshman Oshae Brissett combined to score 66 points for Syracuse (18-10, 7-8 ACC) in its 78-74 loss to No. 10 North Carolina (22-7, 11-5 ACC) Wednesday night in the Carrier Dome.
Battle posted 26 points and six assists, Howard recorded 23 points and Brissett compiled his 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Theo Pinson led the Tar Heels with 23 points, seven assists and six boards and Joel Berry II added 18 points.
How it was Decided
Berry II stole the ball and finished on the other end to give North Carolina a 74-72 lead with 1:39 remaining and he sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds remaining.
Game Summary
North Carolina used an 11-2 run to take an early 19-7 lead. Marek Dolezaj made a layup, followed by back-to-back buckets from Battle, a Howard 3-pointer and two free throws from Battle to pull within three.
Five-straight points gave the Tar Heels a 28-20 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first half. North Carolina stretched its lead to 12, but Brissett drained a trey at the buzzer to send the Orange into the locker room down 41-32.
Two Battle free throws and a Howard jumper pulled Syracuse within three but the Tar Heels pushed their lead to 56-48 with 13:41 to play.
With North Carolina clinging to a 68-59 lead, Howard scored five points to pull the Orange within four. The Tar Heels extended their lead back to eight and Syracuse responded with a dunk by Brissett, and six-straight points from Battle to tie the game at 74 with 3:07 to go.
Numbers of Note
North Carolina shot 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) from the field and Syracuse was 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) on the night. The Tar Heels held a 38-34 advantage on the glass and outscored the Orange 17-2 off the bench. Syracuse made 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) of its shots from the charity stripe.
The game was played in front of an attendance of 27,165, the nation's largest on-campus crowd this season. The Orange now hold three of the top four on-campus attendance totals this year.
Paschal Chukwu finished with 11 rebounds and four blocks.
Battle, Howard and Brissett each totaled 40 minutes on the night. Battle, who leads Division I in average minutes played, has now played 40 minutes in nine-straight contests.
