5-Run Fifth Leads 'Cuse Past Yale

HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Bryce Holmgren was 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI and a run to lead Syracuse (6-4) to an 8-2 victory over Yale Friday afternoon at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational. The Orange lost, 3-0, to UNLV in the morning matchup.
Game 1: UNLV 3, Syracuse 0
Janine Petmecky pitched a complete game with three hits, two walks and seven strikeouts to lead UNLV to a 3-0 victory. Mia Trejo went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
Holmgren batted 1-for-2 and Freshman Gabby Teran and junior Hannah Dossett each went 1-for-3.
Sophomore Alexa Romero started in the circle for Syracuse and dropped to 4-1 on the season. In 4.2 innings of work, Romero allowed one run on two hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched 1.1 hitless innings, but allowed two runs, two walks and fanned one.
An RBI double from Petmecky gave the Runnin' Rebels a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Trejo doubled in two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth for UNLV.
The Orange loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, but were unable to bring anyone home.
Game 2: Syracuse 8, Yale 2
A five-run fifth inning powered Syracuse past Yale, 8-2. Senior AnnaMarie Gatti pitched the first five innings and allowed one run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts to earn her second win on the year. Senior Baylee Douglass went the rest of the way, surrendering one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Junior Alicia Hansen finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs. Sophomore Toni Martin finished 1-for-3 with a solo homer to center, Teran went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and a run and Dossett produced an RBI single in her lone at-bat.
Junior Andrea Bombace drove in Syracuse's first run with an RBI fielder's choice in the second. Yale tied the score at one in the top of the third with an RBI double and the Orange retook the lead in the bottom of the inning off an RBI single by Holmgren.
In the fifth, Martin hit a leadoff homerun, Holmgren doubled in two runs, Teran plated a run with a triple and Dossett added an RBI single to give Syracuse a 7-1 lead.
Yale scored a run in the sixth off of an Orange throwing error and Holmgren capped off the scoring on the day with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Of Note
Romero had a streak of 9.2 hitless innings pitched snapped in the fourth inning against UNLV.
Holmgren has reached base in 32 straight games for the Orange.

Syracuse faces UTSA and Houston tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. (CT) and 4:30 p.m. (CT), respectively.
