Orange Face 5-0 Setback at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team faced a 5-0 setback, Tuesday night at Lynah Rink, after squaring-off with in-state rival No. 6 Cornell. Freshman Edith D'Astous-Moreau tallied a career-high 32 saves between the pipes for the Orange.
"We really didn't answer the bell, especially in that first period when we got behind," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I thought we battled in the second and third period but it's a 60-minute game. We're disappointed but they're a good team and we just ran out of gas there in the third."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Cornell jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just under five minutes into the game when Kristin O'Neill notched her first goal of the game. The Big Red tacked on two more goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Orange played a much improved second period, outshooting the Big Red 14-11 in the middle stanza. However, a pair of goals in the second, including the third by O'Neill for the hat trick, put Cornell up 5-0, a result that would remain the same to the end of the game.
OF NOTE
D'Astous-Moreau made her third career start in goal for the Orange, notching a career-best 32 saves in the contest.
LOOKING AHEAD
"Throw the records out the door," said Flanagan. "It's Syracuse versus RIT [this weekend] and we always have great matchups with them. It's going to be a tough weekend but we have three weekends to get on a run."
UP NEXT
The Orange return to Tennity for the first game in a home-and-home with RIT on Friday, Feb. 9. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
