
Orange Sign Five for 2018 Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse women's soccer team welcomes five new additions to the roster for the 2018 season as announced by head coach Phil Wheddon on Friday, Feb. 9. The signees include forwards Meghan Root and Marisa Fischetti, defenders Abby Jonathan and Jenna Tivnan, and goalkeeper Ally Wakeman. Together, the five student-athletes make up the class of 2018 and will all suit up for the Orange in the fall.

"This class will provide us with talent and depth in multiple positions," said Wheddon. "We expect each player to contribute significantly this year and we are thrilled to have them joining our program. We know a lot about these players and not only are they amazing on the field but they are wonderful people from great families."Â

This signing class features players predominately from the Northeast, representing the states of New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

Meghan Root
Hometown: Aracde, N.Y.
High School: Pioneer Central
Club Team: WNY Flash Academy
Position: Forward

A five-year member of the Pioneer Central High School varsity soccer team, Root helped her team to four consecutive ECIC Division III Championships. The forward posted an impressive senior season, notching 45 goals and 13 assists to help the Panthers to an undefeated season and a Section 6 Class A Championship. Root totaled 126 goals and 64 assists in her high-school career and earned ALL-WNY First Team and All-State Third Team honors in 2017.

Marisa Fischetti
Hometown: Massapequa, N.Y.
High School: Massapequa
Club Team: FC Fury
Position: Forward

Fischetti, a Massapequa, New York native, played three years on the varsity soccer team at Massapequa High School before foregoing her senior season to play for the FC Fury in 2017. In her three years at Massapequa, Fischetti helped the team to a 53-4-5 record, tallying 22 goals and nine assists. The team was NYSPHSAA State Champions in both 2014 and 2015 and Fischetti earned All-Long Island Second-Team honors during the 2015 season.

The duo of Fischetti and Jonathan bring vast experience to the Orange midfield in 2018 as both athletes participated in the US Soccer Development Academy in 2017.

Abby Jonathan
Hometown: New Vernon, N.J.
High School: Kent Place School
Club Team: PDA Sky Blue FC
Position: Defender

Defender Jonathan hails from New Vernon, New Jersey where she spent three seasons on the varsity soccer team at Kent Place School. Jonathan tallied 22 goals and 31 assists during her three-year high-school career and earned All-State Second Team honors during her junior season. As part of the PDA Gunners, Jonathan led the team as captain to the ECNL National Championship. In 2017, the midfielder served as the captain for the U18/19 PDA Sky Blue FC.

Jenna Tivnan
Hometown: Easton, Mass.
High School: The Governor's Academy
Club Team: Boston Breakers Academy
Position: Defender

Tivnan will help solidify the Orange backline, having primarily played as a center back in her four years at The Governor's Academy. The Easton, Massachusetts native accumulated 13 goals and eight assists during her high-school tenure and served as the team's captain her senior year. Tivnan also played for the Boston Breakers Academy, leading her team to the NPL Championship and the US Club National Championship in 2016. She was an Esmark All-American in 2017 and a two-time member of the All-State team her junior and senior seasons.

Ally Wakeman
Hometown: Lawrenceville, N.J.
High School: Lawrence
Club Team: N/A
Position: Goalkeeper

The lone goalkeeper in the 2018 class, Wakeman hails from Lawrenceville, New Jersey where she spent four years on her high school team, the Lawrence Cardinals. Wakeman helped her team to a 9-9-4 record her senior season, making 75 saves in goal, en route to considerable postseason honors. The keeper was tabbed as the Goalkeeper of the Year in addition to making All-CVC First Team as a senior. Wakeman finished her high school career with 347 saves and was elected team captain for her senior season.
