Orange Lead Nation With 3 Tewaaraton Watch List Members
3/1/2018 9:40:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Three Syracuse standouts have been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, with Brendan Bomberry, Nate Solomon and Nick Mellen all being tabbed to the 50-player list on Thursday night.
The most prestigious award in college lacrosse, Orange players have earned the honor on three occasions, which was first presented in 2001. Mike Powell won it in 2002 and 2004, while Mike Leveille capturing it in 2008. Syracuse's three selections ties Denver for the most nationally.
"Six of 10 finalists return and this year, as always, will be a wide open and competitive race for the 2018 Tewaaraton Award," said Jeff Harvey, chairman of The Tewaaraton Foundation. "The 100 players are deserving of being on our first Tewaaraton Watch Lists of the season. Our selection committees have as broad a field to choose from as we've ever had."
Bomberry, who leads the Orange in scoring through three games, with nine points, led the nation in man-up goals at Denver in 2016 before transferring to Syracuse. Bomberry is the top returning scorer on the Syracuse squad from last season after he netted 38 points in 2017.
Solomon is right behind Bomberry, with eight points on the year. He tallied the second-most goals on the team in 2017, registering 28 tallies as a sophomore. Solomon has started 19-straight games on the 'Cuse attack line heading into Sunday's game.
Mellen missed the entire 2017 season due to injury, but has picked up right where he left off following his breakout freshman season in 2016. Despite a loss to Albany, Mellen held the 2017 nation's leading scorer, Connor Fields, well below his season average from a year ago, with just two goals.
Bomberry, Mellen and Solomon return to action on Sunday at Virginia in the ACC Opener. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation. Watch List additions can be made throughout the season.
Individual game tickets are available online (www.Cuse.com), by phone (888-DOME-TIX), or at the Carrier Dome Box Office (Gate B).
New for 2018, parking prices are reduced to $10 at all Carrier Dome surface lots. Individual game tickets start at $10 for adults and $5 for youth (12 and under) for four of the Orange's six remaining home games (North Carolina, Navy, Hobart and Colgate). Ticket for the Orange's two remaining premium games (Johns Hopkins and Notre Dame) cost $15 for adults and $10 for youth (12 and under). Student admission is free for every Syracuse lacrosse game!
