Knight racks up 18 points for 'Cuse
After winning Friday's NCAA 5000-Meter Championship on Friday, Justyn Knight took second less than 24 hours later in the 3000-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M
Knight now owns two individual NCAA titles, three NCAA silver medals and one bronze medal performance in his collegiate career. He earned 18 total team points in under 24 hours at the NCAA Indoor Championships, to put Knight's remarkable feat in perspective, well over 200 schools sponsor men's track and field at the Division I level, Knight alone scored enough points at this NCAA Championship, to place 10th at a team.Â
The 10th place finish ties last season for the best finish in program history, and 18 points are the second-best marks in program history for Syracuse. Syracuse has now finished in the top-11 each of the last-three seasons as well.
Knight narrowly missed becoming the seventh man in NCAA history to complete the 3k/5k double successfully, pushing towards the lead around the final turn, but ultimately being held off by eventual champion Andy Trouard. The Northern Arizona star finished in 8:04.94, and Knight crossed the line in 8:05.76. Arkansas' Cameron Griffith took third in 8:05.91.
Knight heads into his final outdoor campaign with three NCAA titles, two individual, from this cross country and indoor track season, and one team from leading the Orange to the 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
The Bowerman Award hopeful now enters his final outdoor season as a 10-time USTFCCCA All-American, with nine of those honors coming as a member of the first team. Having already earned USTFCCCA Northeast Region Performer of the Year for the third-straight indoor season, he has 15 conference titles (10 individual and five team), making him one of the most decorated athletes in ACC history as well.
