SPARKS, Md. – No. 7/8 Syracuse used an 8-2 scoring run to start the second half to pull away from Harvard in a 20-13 victory on Friday, March 16. The game was played at Tierney Field at the U.S. Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Â
Junior Nicole Levy led the Orange offense with four points. Levy, senior Kelzi Van Atta, sophomore Emily Hawryschuk and freshman Sam Swart all recorded hat tricks as 11 different players scored at least one goal in the victory. Keeley MacAfee and Robyn White had three goals each for Harvard.
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
After Harvard (3-3) tallied two of the first three goals of the second half to cut Syracuse's lead to 11-9, senior Riley Donahue found the back of the net for her first goal of the day. Donahue's goal sparked the Orange on a 6-0 scoring run that extended their advantage to 17-9 with 14:32 remaining. Donahue had two goals during the offensive outburst, which was capped by Swart's third goal of the day.
Â
White ended Harvard's scoring drought of nearly 13 minutes, but back-to-back goals by Levy gave Syracuse (5-2) its largest lead of the day at 19-10 with 6:41 on the clock. The Crimson netted three straight goals before redshirt sophomore Cara Quimby scored with eight seconds remaining for the 20-13 final.
Â
The Orange never trailed in the game as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Syracuse led by four twice in the first half, including a 7-3 lead at the 14:57 mark, but two straight goals by Harvard cut the advantage to two. The teams traded goals the remainder of the half as Syracuse took a 10-7 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Â
OF NOTE
Hawryschuk and Swart recorded hat tricks for the second straight game. Hawryschuk leads the team in in goals (21) and points (22). She has scored multiple goals in six of seven games this season. Swart has 17 goals, including 13 in her last four contests.
