Syracuse ran its string of unbeaten bowl appearances to four, whitewashing Arizona 28-0 in the ninth Aloha Bowl. SU was led by quarterback Marvin Graves and a swarming defense that accounted for four sacks and held the Wildcats to 226 yards of offense. Graves, who was voted Most Outstanding Player for the Orange, completed 10-of-19 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed 11 times for 45 yards. Graves opened the flood gates with a 5-yard draw for a touchdown on Syracuse’s first possession.
In the second quarter, Graves found a wide open Terry Richardson for a 47-yard score as the Orange took a 14-0 halftime lead. SU put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with a 90-yard touchdown drive, ending with Graves hitting tight end Chris Gedney from six yards out. Graves scored the final touchdown of the game on a 7-yard draw up the middle.
SU’s defense did not allow Arizona to breach its 28-yard line and pitched the first shutout against the Wildcats in 19 years. Rob Thomson had nine tackles and Dan Conley added eight for the Orange.
