Villanova Head Coach Andy Talley
On the sideline emotions after the missed goal:
“I think still pretty up because the momentum was with us as we were finishing up the fourth quarter, and I think we were ahead in the stats and everything and were playing pretty well. We did what we accomplished which was to keep the game close in the fourth quarter and maybe they’d get a little tight and can have a shot to pull it out. I was happy to go into the overtime and I knew pretty much it was going to be who made a couple plays here and there.”
On whether or not they were the better team:
“I would say we played a little better than them in the game, I don’t know if we were the better team, but I think we played a little bit better than them.”
On what areas they thought they could exploit going into the game:
“I really felt like this game was going to be a 14-point spread, maybe even a 20-point spread. I felt like our quarterback had to play great for us to even be in the game and he played great. He was the best quarterback on the field, he kept drives alive, and we had great punt returns. We got better and better as the game went on.”
On Syracuse being a blitzing team:
“I think when you blitz a team like us with [John Robertson’s] running ability you got to really spy on him and know where he’s going to be, and we were hoping that that would happen and we get some big plays. They would run past him while he was going north and south. He kept us in the game with his feet.”
On Villanova’s defensive side:
“We had trouble running against our team during preseason, and I thought, you know what, these guys can play defense pretty good. They showed it today, they played really hard. We’re going to grow from this game; I think this team can be special, I think so.”
