Villanova Student-Athlete Quotes
2014 Syracuse Football
Syracuse vs. Villanova
August 29, 2014
Syracuse, N.Y. / Carrier Dome
John Robertson, QB
On the Syracuse defense:
“The coaches told me that if I felt pressure from the defense that I should get out before they get close because they are fast and big, so they will take you down. When I felt pressure I rolled out, but they were running on me fast.”
On the missed field goal at the end of regulation:
“I was trying to stay as level-headed as possible because I knew that they (Syracuse) wouldn’t score, so I knew we still had a chance with overtime. It was devastating. You can’t blame it on the kicker because we should have put it in the end zone. That’s on us as an offense.”
On team’s performance
“I think we played great. Syracuse is a great team. We played up to them. We played our hearts out and can use this as a learning experience. We have a whole season ahead of us.”
Poppy Livers, WR
On the loss:
“Á lot of people projected us to lose, but I believe we should have won that game. We have a great group of guys and I told them to be proud and keep their heads up. Once we watch the film this game is dead and buried.”
On the Syracuse defense:
“Our coaches did a great job of coaching us in preparation for this game. We were running the ball well and our receivers were getting open. Overall, I’m very proud in our team.”
On his punt return for a touchdown:
“I felt a lot of momentum swing after that play. Coach told me ‘last time you played in a Dome you returned one.’”
Dillon Lucas, LB
On Terrell Hunt’s punch:
“I was trying to make a play on the ball and I guess he didn’t like the way I hit him. When I rolled off him I felt a punch. There were no words exchanged, but maybe it was the way our defense kept pressuring him.”
On Austin Wilson coming in:
“We thought with Terrel Hunt out that they were going to run the ball more, get downhill and do less East and West plays. Going into halftime we focused on stopping the run. We weren’t successful enough, but we played hard and were the more physical team.”
On Syracuse’s fake field goal:
“A lot of us saw it coming. We knew they wanted the game to end. We didn’t think they would run that play because in film we saw two of their option plays. We didn’t execute it to the best of our ability. It’s a pill we have to swallow.”
