Syracuse Student-Athlete Quotes
2014 Syracuse Football
Syracuse vs. Villanova
August 29, 2014
Syracuse, N.Y. / Carrier Dome
Prince-Tyson Gulley, Gr, RB
On his touchdown run:
“My line made a great hole for me and all I did was go through all my reads and bust it out.”
On facing adversity:
“We just had to bounce back. That’s what happens in college football. That was adversity for us and we had to rise up against that.”
On preparing for the Central Michigan game:
“We need to come back and clean up everything we know we need to clean up and come back with a lot of intensity and hard work.”
Austin Wilson, So., QB
On going in after Terrel Hunt was ejected:
“Literally, I was focusing on what the next play was going to be, how to signal it in. At that point I just had to react.”
On advice he received from Terrel Hunt:
“He said slow it down. Let things come to me and take what the defense gives you.”
Durell Eskridge, Jr., S
On defending Villanova QB John Robertson
“We had to spy him, but he was out there making plays. We just had to play football.”
Riley Dixon, Sr., P
On the fake field goal:
“Coach Shafer came up to me and asked me. Naturally I’m an athlete, a competitor. You may not think so (because I’m a punter). I’m excited to go out there and help the team the best way I can.”
On his teammate’s reaction after the game:
“It is an incredible opportunity, number one, to play Division I sports with a coach like Coach Scott Shafer. And to be trusted enough to have the opportunity I had tonight, I can’t be thankful enough to him and the university for giving me this opportunity.”
On Terrel Hunt:
“Terrel, like coach says, is an incredible competitor. He is the first one to come up to us and tell us you know hey guys, ‘I’m sorry.’ Terrel is a good kid and I know that happens to some people sometimes. He handled it very well.”
On the winning TD pass to tight end Kendall Moore:
“It was kind of a shock. I was thinking about it already. I don’t know if I jumped or something. I kind of blacked out.”
On joining the team as a walk-on:
“To be honest, I know I say this a lot, but I’m living the dream. I was a kid and now here I am. Playing Division I sports is a dream and every day I am fulfilling that dream.”
Ashton Broyld, Jr., WR
On winning such a close game:
“First thing that coach said is ‘that a win is a win’. We didn’t come out and execute the way we expected to. We fought through adversity and you know we won the game.”
On (quarterback) Austin Wilson taking over after Terrel Hunt’s ejection:
“I think he responded very well. He led us to victory and that’s all we can ask for.”
On the call that led to Terrel Hunt’s ejection:
“He just let the emotions get the best of him at that time. I’m pretty sure it will never happen again.”
Kendall Moore, So., TE
On his thoughts about the fake field goal in overtime:
“We run a lot of fakes on special teams. I was just trying to make it as normal as possible. The other team had been calling it out all day, but they hadn’t really been playing it. So, I knew the opportunity was there.”
On the fake from his perspective:
“I ran my route and I knew I was covered. I saw Riley (Dixon) jump. I had no idea what he was doing. I couldn’t really see the ball until it was three inches from my face. Then, I just reached out and grabbed it.”
On Austin Wilson taking over at quarterback:
“Austin (Wilson) did a great job. He came out and was a little nervous at first. After that he was just rolling. After his first two passes we talked to him on the sideline and he was just rolling. We told him we had his back and he bought into it. He had a good game.”
Cameron Lynch, Sr., LB
On Villanova quarterback John Robertson:
“He was awesome today. He’s similar to South Florida's old quarterback, B.J. Daniels. He did well today. Big ups to him and Coach Talley. Now what we have to do, as a team and as a defense, is go back to the drawing board and get better.”
On Villanova’s missed field goal at the end of regulation:
“It’s luck of the draw. You wipe your head, thank God, and keep pushing. We got back out there and made some stops."
