Orangewomen Advance To BIG EAST Semi-Finals

The women's soccer team defeated Rutgers University in the BIG EAST women's soccer quarterfinals, 3-1 at Yurcak Field on Oct. 28. The team will advance to the semi-final game to be held at Notre Dame University on Nov. 3.

Freshman Nina Scalzo (Webster, NY) opened the scoring for the Orangewomen in the fourth minute as she converted a cross from teammate Erica Mastrogiacomo (Weymouth, MA) for the 1-0 lead. Annie Turner (Littleton, CO) increased the lead to two as she posted an unassisted goal with just over six minutes left in the first half.

The Scarlet Knights were first to strike in the second half as Danielle Piotrowsky scored off a missed kick by the SU goalkeeper, making the score 2-1. With just over seven minutes left to play, the Scarlet Knights deflected a cross by senior Erin O'Grady (Glastonbury, CT) that was picked up by freshman Christine LeMieux (Topsham, ME) for Syracuse's third and final goal.

With the victory, the Orangewomen are now 14-6-0, while the Scarlet Knights finish the 2000 season at 9-9-2.
