
Orangewomen Defeat Northeastern To Open Tournament

Syracuse (10-4) opened the match with a 15-11 win and the two squads battled back and forth for the rest of the match. Northeastern won game two 15-10, while Syracuse took game three 15-11. Northeastern won the fourth game 18-16, but the Orangewomen won the match, 15-13, in rally points.
Senior rightside hitter Dana Fiume (Island Park, NY) had 19 kills and seven blocks to lead all players. Fiume and senior outside hitter Julianna Stokes (Naperville, OH) each served four aces. Stokes added 12 digs and 11 kills. Freshman Christen Casey (Long Beach, IL) posted career highs with four aces and 12 digs in the match. Junior outside hitter Carol Munger (Canadaigua, NY) posted 16 kills and six digs. Senior outside hitter Julie Nicholson (Horseheads, NY) bolstered the defense with five blocks and 10 digs.
Junior setter Noreen Carroll (LaGrange, IL) posted 49 assists in the win.
Tournament action continues Saturday at 10 a.m., when Manhattan faces Northeastern. Syracuse plays High Point at 12:30 p.m. The evening session begins at 5 p.m. with High Point and Northeastern. The Orange and Manhattan meet in the finale at 7:30 p.m.
