The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team travels to Loudonville, NY to face the Siena Saints on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Orangewomen take a break from BIG EAST play and look to continue their winning streak against intrastate teams.
Syracuse went 1-1 this past weekend with a 3-2 loss to Rutgers and a 3-1 victory against Villanova. Against Rutgers on Friday night, Syracuse lost the first game, 19-30, but battled back to win the second and fourth games, 30-26 and 30-28. In the fifth and deciding game, Rutgers edged out SU, 15-13. Syracuse bounced back to defeat Villanova, 3-1. The Orangewomen hit a season-high .351 in the match.
Senior co-captains Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) and Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) are providing leadership and stellar play for the Orangewomen. Carroll tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 46 assists and a career-high 10 kills against Villanova. The all-time assists leader at SU with 4,502, Carroll is moving up the charts in several other categories. Her 119 matches and 422 games played are closing in on the school’s all-time top ten records, as are her 228 block assists, 264 total blocks and 0.63 blocks per game. She has moved into seventh place in career digs with 835.
Munger hit in double figures in both matches this past weekend. She had 15 kills against Rutgers and a season-high 16 kills versus Villanova. She hit a combined .309 for the two matches. Since her return from a knee injury, Munger has hit in double figures in six of her 10 matches. Munger needs three more kills to move into 10th place on Syracuse’s all-time kills list. She currently has 627 kills.
Freshman Laura Koster (Houston, TX/Westfield) continues to lead the team in several statistics categories. She is first in kills (222), kills per game (3.42), hitting percentage (.318), service aces (21), block solos (22), block assists (51) and total blocks (73). She has hit in double figures in the last four matches and in 13 of 18 outings this season.
Sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) has taken sole possession of first place among the Orangewomen with 154 digs. Casey had a match-high 14 digs against Villanova and tied for the team-lead versus Rutgers with 11. She has recorded double digits in digs in the past three matches.
Syracuse has not lost to Siena in their 10 meetings, including last year’s 3-0 victory. The Saints are 13-5 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC. The team earned two conference wins over the weekend against Rider and Loyola.
