
Volleyball Looks To Extend Winning Streak Against Colgate

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse University women’s volleyball team looks to extend its two-match winning streak against Colgate on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Women’s Building. SU (10-9, 2-5 BIG EAST) is undefeated this season against intrastate teams and is 8-4 against non-conference opponents.
Senior co-captain Noreen Carroll (La Grange, IL/Lyons Township) was named BIG EAST co-Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 22 after her performance against Siena. The setter notched her sixth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 10 digs. It is the second time this season that Carroll has been honored by the BIG EAST.
With her three games played against Siena, Carroll is now tied for 10th on SU’s all-time games played list with 425. The all-time assists leader at SU with 4,536, Carroll, is moving up the charts in several other categories. Her 120 matches played are closing in on the school’s all-time top ten list, as are her 233 block assists and 269 total blocks. Carroll is in seventh place with 845 career digs.
Fellow teammate Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) hit her way into the SU record book against Siena. With her nine kills, Munger moved into 10th place on Syracuse’s career kills list with 636. Since her return from a knee injury on September 22, Munger has recorded 114 kills, good for fourth on the team.
Junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) notched seven kills at Siena, running her season total to 161. That surpasses her kill total from last year when she had 156 kills in 32 matches. She has hit in double figures in nine matches this season.
Syracuse leads the series against Colgate, 31-9-2, including last year’s 3-0 win. Colgate is 9-14 overall and 3-6 in the Patriot League.This past weekend, the Raiders defeated Lafayette, 3-1, and then lost to Lehigh in five games. Michelle Mahaney, a Syracuse native and Westhill High School graduate, posted 13 kills and 11 digs against Lehigh.
Tuesday’s match will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by Time Warner Cable 13 as part of the SUper Sports package and will be aired Oct. 24 at 8 p.m.
