
Syracuse Wins Exhibition Opener, 96-77

SYRACUSE, NY- Senior forward Preston Shumpert scored 21 points, including 11 in the first half, to lead Syracuse to a 96-77 win against Upstate NY AAU in SU’s first exhibition game of the season on Thurday night.
After trailing by three in the opening minutes, Syracuse rattled off 13 unanswered points to take a 15-7 lead, an advantage SU would not lose for the rest of the game.
Midway through the first half, DeShaun Williams hit back-to-back threes and freshman Hakim Warrick followed with a layup to give the Orangemen a 23-point lead, 38-15, the biggest margin of the game. After a basket by Williams, who finished the game with 20 points, nine assists and six rebounds, SU entered the half ahead, 50-32.
Thirteen players saw court time for the Orangemen, including SU’s four freshman. First year guard Josh Pace scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds, and freshman guard Craig Forth recorded nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Former Syracuse player Lazarus Sims scored four points and dished out six assists for Upstate NY AAU. The visitors were led by ex-Tulane University performer Carline Hartman, who tallied 16 points.
