
SU Orangewomen Face Pittsburgh And West Virginia On The Road

The SU Orangewomen look to extend its six-match winning streak and move up in the BIG EAST standings as they take to the road against Pittsburgh and West Virginia this weekend. After sweeping both Niagara and Canisius, 3-0, on Wednesday night in a doubleheader, SU meets Pittsburgh on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then plays West Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Syracuse hit a team-record .485 against Canisius with six players hitting above .300. Senior co-captain Carol Munger (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) had a team-high 13 kills versus Niagara and tied for the match-high with 14 kills against Canisius. Munger has hit in double figures in four straight matches.
Freshman Rachel Crooks (Green Springs, OH/Clyde) hit above .500 in both the matches on Wednesday, including a career-high .667 against Canisius. Classmates Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) and Ashley Kimes (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley North) joined Crooks in double figures against the Golden Griffins with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Orangewomen have outblocked their opponents, 31.5 to 15 in the past five matches. Junior Abby Van Mater (West Chester, PA/Unionville) recorded 15 total blocks in the five matches, including three solo blocks against Niagara.
Sophomore Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) served up eight aces in the past three matches. She leads the team with 26 total service aces.
The Pittsburgh Panthers are 7-14 overall and 4-4 in the BIG EAST. Pitt is on a four-match skid but leads the series against SU, 23-3, and defeated Syracuse in five games in 2000. West Virginia is 6-17 and 2-6 in BIG EAST with a 3-0 loss to Ohio on Tuesday night. West Virginia holds the advantage against Syracuse, 10-5, including last year’s 3-1 win.
