Year XVI: Boeheim 25 Years In 25 Days

The Orangemen tipped off their preseason play last night defeating Upstate AAU 96-77 in the Carrier Dome. The 16th season of the Jim Boeheim-era at SU was led by play of freshman Lawrence Moten. The Orangemen won the BIG EAST title that season, defeating the Hoyas to claim the championship.

Record 22-10, 7-2 in the BIG EAST

Lawrence Moten was named national Freshman of the Year by UPI.

Moten is the all-time leading freshman scorer in BIG EAST history.

Moten also broke the Syracuse freshman record of scoring average and total points (583).

Factoid: Lawrence Moten scored in double figures 31 times in 32 games, including his first 27 games. No SU freshman or rookie has ever had a longer streak.

Jim Boeheim was selected as the Coach of the Year in the East and the National Association of Basketball Coaches voted him their District II Coach of the Year.

All five SU starters finished this season with over 40 steals overall and over 25 in BIG EAST play.

SU set a single game record for most three-pointers made and attempted vs. Notre Dame, hitting 12-37.

"The goal is to go out and play the best you can, and if your players play the best they can, you've done the best job you can do as a coach. That should be everybody's goal, any athlete, any coach. If they've done their very best they can, it doesn't matter if they win one game or 1000 games. Just do the very best you can every time you go out there to practice or to play."

BIG GAME: BIG EAST Title Win Against the Hoyas
Despite a 23-point performance from Alonzo Mourning, Syracuse defeated the Georgetown Hoyas 56-54 in the finals of the BIG EAST tournament. This is Syracuse's third BIG EAST Tournament title and first in five attempts against the Hoyas. The Orangemen were led by Lawrence Moten's 20 points and seven rebounds. Mike Hopkins scored 15 points. Dave Johnson and Lawrence Moten were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
