Jones and Culley Shine On First Day of BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship

Culley will also compete in the 200-meter dash finals on Sunday after advancing to the finals with a season-best time of 24.84. It was the fifth-fastest time of the preliminary round.
Senior Opal Jones (Capitol Heights, MD) became the first Syracuse student-athlete this season to reach an NCAA provisional qualifying time, clocking a personal-best 8.41 in the 60-meter hurdles. Jones is the top-seed heading into Sunday's finals.
Orangemen sophomore Tim Adrian (Moorpark, CA) provided all the Syracuse points on the first day of competition. Adrian finished seventh in the 35-pound weight throw with a personal-best 54'01.75". He will also compete in the shot put on Sunday. Adrian currently owns the fifth-best shot put of the season in the BIG EAST.
Sophomore Richard Polidore (Chino, CA) will represent the Orangemen in Sunday's men's 200-meter dash finals. Polidore crossed the tape in 21.87, the fifth-fastest time of the preliminaries.
A pair of Orangewomen milers turned in their fastest times of the season despite not advancing to the finals. Sophomore Maria Varela (Deer Park, NY) turned in season-best 5:11.42, while freshman Lauren Rich (Londonderry, NH) clocked a personal-best 5:25.16.
Connecticut leads the women's championship after the first day with 33 points. West Virginia is second with 32.5 points. The Georgetown Hoyas are in first place on the men's side with 41 points. Connecticut ranks second with 36 points.
