The Huskies used a three-run fifth inning to break open a scoreless contest in the opener. A double by Mandy Simjian drove in Connecticut's first two runs of the innings. Lisa Miller pinch ran for Simjian and later scored on single by Lisa Girolamo. Connecticut added a run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Megan Biddle.
The fifth inning ended Syracuse pitcher Heather Brown's (Bloomfield, NM) streak of 20 consecutive scorless innings. The frame also stopped her string of 20 innings with at least one strike out. Brown struck out eight on the day, running her total to 40 in 23 innings of work in her last three games.
The junior took the loss, dropping her record to 4-9 on the season. All four runs were earned as she allowed 13 hits without a walk in seven innings.
The SU offense was limited to just two hits. Sophomore Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, CA) singled to lead off the fourth inning and sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) doubled down the right-field line in the bottom half of the seventh.
Caryn Haskins was the winner, allowing just those two hits and striking out three in the complete-game victory. She is now 3-1 for the season.
The Orangewomen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap with a run in the bottom of the first. Holowich led off the game with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA). A two-out double by senior Missy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) drove in the Orangewomen's only run of the day.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the top of the third, plating a pair of runs. Nicole Dubovik started the rally with a bunt single, but was forced at second base on a fielder's choice. A single by Abbie Link put runners on first and second with one, and a hit by Biddle drove in the tying run. The Huskies took a 2-1 advantage on a sacrifice fly by Lisa Girolamo.
Connecticut added another run in the seventh. Manlius, NY native Katie Kestranek (Fayetteville-Manlius H.S.) singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice. She scored on a double by Jessica Yanosy.
Holowich and Bieman led the offense, combining for four of the Orangewomen's five hits. Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) had the other hit for Syracuse.
DiMaggio took the loss for Syracuse on the mound. The righthander allowed five hits and three runs in seven innings. She struck out three and walked two. Dimaggio is now 3-8 on the season.
Megan Biddle was the winner for Connecticut. She struck out six in seven innings to improve her record to 3-6.
The Orangewomen step out of conference when they host Siena at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 19.
