Softball Splits at Virginia Tech

The Orangwomen are now 5-12 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Hokies stand 23-13 overall and 5-1in BIG EAST play.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) threw her first shutout of the season for the Orangewomen in the nightcap. DiMaggio scattered five hits in seven innings. She struck out eight, while walking just one. The win moved her to 2-4 on the season.
Both pitchers cruised through the first five innings in the nightcap. Neither team scored, recording four hits each. Each squad also left runners in scoring position.
The Orangewomen finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) led off the inning with her fourth hit of day. Junior Becky Snyder (Wilkes-Barre, PA) pinch ran and stole second base, the Orangewomen's first stolen base of the season. She moved to third on a fly ball by senior Missy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario), and scored when freshman Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY) singled through the right side.
Syracuse added an insurance run in the seventh with a two-out rally. Holowich knocked a triple to right center and scored when sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) singled to center for her first RBI of the season.
Holowich paced the Syracuse offense with thre hits, including the Orangewomen's first triple of the season. Grillo also had two hits for the game.
Catherine Gilliam suffered the loss for the Hokies. She went the distance, allowing nine hits and striking out two. Gilliam is now 7-4 on the season.
The Orangewomen took a 4-2 lead into the last frame of game one, but a three-run rally gave the Hokies the win. A bunt single by Mindy Wylie scored the Mary Lowzinski from third for the game-winning run. Ali Verbage and Maura Green also drove in runs in the inning.
Herrman collected her second career three-hit game with a double and two singles. Sophomore Lindsay Richards (Burr Ridge, IL) had two hits and scored twice. Freshman Cortney Nickerson (Farmington, NM) got the start at designated player and responded with her first career hit and two runs batted in.
Syracuse took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. A hit, fielder's choice and an error loaded the bases and set the stage for Nickerson's first hit that scored one. Holowich followed with a single to center. An error on the play allowed two runs to score.
The Orangewomen added another run in the fourth. Richards started the inning with an infield hit and went to second on a throwing error by the shortstop. Another error moved Snyder, a pinch runner, to third, and she scored on a groundout by Nickerson.
Bieman was the losing pitcher, throwing one-third of an inning in relief. She is now 1-2 on the season. Bieman allowed two hits and one run. Syracuse starter Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) threw six innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits. She struck out nine, but walked six.
Ashlee Dobbe was the winner in relief for the Hokies, improving to 10-4. She threw three scoreless innings, striking out four.
Syracuse is scheduled to open the home portion of its schedule on Thursday, April 5 versus Albany at 4 p.m. The Orangewomen will also host their first BIG EAST weekend with a doubleheader versus Pittsburgh at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 7 and versus No. 11 Notre Dam at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 8.
