Holowich went 3-for-3 in the second game of the twin bill with a single, double and triple. She now has 42 hits for the campaign, the highest-single season total by an Orangewoman in the program's two years. Holowich's triple was her third of the season, also breaking an SU single-season record. It was the centerfielder's fifth three-hit game of the season. She now leads the team with a .313 batting average.
The Wildcats jumped out early in game one, plating three runs in the top half of the first with the help of three Orangewomen errors. Two singles and an error put runners on second and third with just one out. Sara Carlson then drove a ball to right field for what looked like the second out, but a Syracuse misplay allowed the first run to score. Sara Krueger then delivered the big hit with a two-RBI single.
The Orangewomen loaded the bases in the first inning on two walks and a hit batter, but failed to score. They did it again in the third, but this time did not come up empty. Sophomore Jackie Herrman (Warren, OH) singled up the middle with one out. Pinch runner Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE) pinch ran and moved to second when a fly ball by seniorMissy Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) was misplayed in left field. A hit by freshman catcher Jaime Grillo (Brentwood, NY) loaded the bases, and freshman Nikki Lincoln (Baton Rouge, LA) drew a walk to drive in the first run. Senior Shanna Newell (Fort Edward, NY) plated the second run with a groundball to second base.
The Wildcats added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on a single by Krueger that scored Janna Bullock. Bullock had entered the game as a pinch runner for Heather Garboden who had singled.
Junior Heather Brown (Bloomfield, NM) took the loss for the Orangemen, just her third defeat in her last nine starts. She struck out three and allowed nine hits in seven innings of work, dropping her record to 8-11. Keri Stoller was the winner in relief, improving her record to 18-4. Stoller worked four shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.
Sophomore Kristen Collins (Stow, MA) and Newell also had hits for the Orangewomen. Garboden led Villanova with three hits, while Robin Flier and Krueger each had two.
Stoller continued to frustrate the Syracuse offense in the second game, holding the Orangewomen to just five hits, three of them by Holowich. She pitched six scoreless innings, striking out six without a walk. Her 19th victory of the season was the 66th of her career, breaking the Villanova career record held by Tina Sabunas (1993-96).
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Carlson hit her eighth home run of the season, a two-run blast to right-center field. Villanova went ahead, 3-0, on a RBI single by Karen Niwinski in the top of the sixth inning. Syracuse made three more defensive miscues in the seventh, leading to three Villanova runs. Carlson and Ricci Lugo had RBIs in the inning.
Lincoln and freshman Cortney Nickerson (Farmington, NM) had the Orangewomen's other two hits.
Sophomore Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, NY) took the loss, dropping to 6-11 on the season. She gave up three earned runs on nine hits and struck out five in the complete-game effort.
The Orangewomen continue their final weekend homestand of the season when they host Rutgers at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
