Syracuse pressured the Big Red defense relentlessly in the first half, earning eight corner kicks and 12 shots, including five on goal.
The Orangewomen notched the only goal of the game when freshman Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Erica Mastrogiacomo (Weymouth, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) and chipped the ball over Cornell keeper Katie Thomas in the 26th minute. Sophomore defender Courtney Spencer (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) also picked up an assist on the play.
Galas' goal came less than two minutes after head coach April Kater substituted her into the game.
"Natalie is a finisher," Kater said. "You get her inside that 18-yard mark and she will put the ball in the goal."
Galas leads the team with four goals and eight points. SU freshman keeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) made four saves and posted her second shutout of the season. Thomas made six saves for Cornell.
Syracuse (4-1-0 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) improved to 5-0 all-time against the Big Red.
The Orange will begin its BIG EAST season on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 14th-ranked Miami.
