A stifling Syracuse defense held the Bulls to just six shots and two corner kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Myers (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) earned her first career shutout, making five saves in 90 minutes of play, improving to 2-0 on the season.
"Shannon came up big for us today," head coach April Kater said. "She got her first career shutout and played solid on the corners." Kater also cited the stellar play of midfielders Megan Huez (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Joseph's) and Anne-Marie Lapalme (Granby, QC/John Abbott Prep), and defender Courtney Spencer (Syracuse, N.Y./ Westhill).
It didn't take long for SU sophomore forward Nina Scalzo (Webster, N.Y./Webster) to score her first goal of the game, an unassisted tally at 1:16. Scalzo scored her second unassisted goal less than three minutes later. Syracuse freshman forward Natalie Galas (Sterling Heights, Mich./Bishop Foley) gave Syracuse a 3-0 lead heading into intermission, blasting a pass from Huez past Bulls keeper Emily Cox at 34:41. Senior co-captain Candy Reich (Pambroke, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) completed the scoring for the Orangewomen with a goal in the 74th minute. Scalzo picked up an assist on the play. Scalzo's five-point effort set a career high and was her second two-goal effort of the season and fourth of her career. She is tied with Shannon Russell (1996-97) for eighth on the all-time goals scored list with 10, and is ninth on the all-time points list at SU with 25. Syracuse will travel next to Champaign, Ill. for a pair of games against two formidable opponents. On Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. the Orangewomen will play Illinois, a team it defeated 3-0 last year in Syracuse. The Orange will then meet second-ranked UCLA for the first time at noon on Sunday, Sept. 9. That game will also be in Champaign.
