Orangemen Face Central Florida in Home Opener

After playing two straight games on the road, the Orangemen host Central Florida in their 2001 home opener. Kickoff is set for Noon at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse has won more than 70 percent of its home openers. SU has won its last two home openers, 63-7 against Buffalo in 2000, and 47-7 against Central Michigan in 1999.

When the Orangemen take the field against the Central Florida on Saturday in their Carrier Dome-opener, many off-the-field activities will take place, including:

Zunic Award Presentation: The 2001 Zunic Award Winners are William and Norma Zunic (Mike's parents), Frank Maloney (Mike's coach) and Henry Grabosky (football, '59) ? The Zunic Award was instituted in an effort to honor the tradition, pride and spirit of the SU football program by the Football Letermen?s Club ? Zunic was a four-year starter at linebacker for the Orange, Mike received his bachelor?s degree in 1981 and his master?s degree in 1982, both in speech communication ? He later became the Consumer Product Sales Manager for Central New York with Oscar Mayer ? He and his wife, Judy, died tragically on July 19th, 1989 when a United Airlines flight crashed in Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 passengers ? During the emergency landing, a flight attendant asked for volunteers to help with the exit door, Mike and Judy volunteered ? They perished in the crash while the people in the area of the plane where they were originally seated survived ? The award will be given annually to anyone who exhibits the courage and spirit of Mike and Judy Zunic ? Those eligible for the award include current and former players, current and former coaches, current and former parents, season ticket holders and anyone associated with Syracuse University Football.
The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Child Identification Kits will be distributed by the SU women's softball team at all Carrier Dome gates as fans exit the building.
